Torrevieja: tourism, construction and transformation
“Torrevieja now has over 113,000 registered residents and is consolidating its growth as one of Spain’s most multicultural cities,” Torrevieja Town Council announced on its website on 12 May, whilst, a few days earlier, the newspaper La Razón did the same with this headline: “Torrevieja is the city with the fastest-growing population in Spain, with a 4.6% increase.” The city, which remains the fifth most populous in the Valencian Community and the third in the province of Alicante, maintains its growth expectations whilst, voluntarily and involuntarily, pushing its urban landscape to adapt to the needs of this exponential population increase, as well as to the technological and future challenges it demands. An example of this is the four major construction projects currently underway in the very centre of Torrevieja:
The new “Paseo del Mar” leisure centre, which will feature 27 retail units, including restaurants, family entertainment and cinemas.
The refurbishment of the old market, which will seek to preserve part of its history, with a focus on gastronomy and co-working spaces.
The former ice factory, set to be converted into council offices, including the town’s new tourist information centre.
Finally, the most recent development has been the demolition of the former nuns’ school, which is set to become a technology centre combining innovation and catering.
Furthermore, outside the town centre, Torrevieja Town Council is promoting the development of the future ‘Alto de la Casilla’ urban park, covering more than 30,000 m² for enjoying the scenery and family leisure, with picnic areas, children’s play areas, a viewpoint and a café, amongst other facilities.
